Ian Currie and Seneca played host to another successful charity football tournament in aid of JustLife charity, where 12 teams competed for the title of 2018 champions.
As with most great stories, the day started slowly for AMFC, drawing the first 2 games and scoring only once.
At that point the bad luck ended and AMFC qualified from the group stage with a victory over past winners Liberty and securing a point versus a strong Gorilla Accounting team (no pun intended).
The semi-finals saw AMFC in a very tight and hard fought game vs Allied Irish Bank. Despite both teams creating lots of chances, neither team scored and the match went to the dreaded penalty shootout. After goalkeeper Perran Cooke (AMFC) saved the 1st penalty, he stood up to send the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-0 to AMFC. He then saved the following penalty from Allied Irish meaning that if AMFC scored the following penalty then they would go through. Thankfully Matt Mawdesley drilled it home to take AMFC to the final.
After meeting Apadmi in the group stage (previously 1-1) they knew it would be a very tight encounter and the game did go right to the wire. Both keepers were kept very busy and it wasn’t until 20 seconds of time remaining that goal scoring hero Matt Mawdesley poked one home to send the crowd wild. With the added-on time and constant pressure, AMFC held on to take home the trophy and be crowned Seneca Partners 5 a-side Winners 2018.
Thanks again to Seneca Partners for hosting the event and for successfully raising over £3000 for JustLife!
