Timothy Taylor’s (http://timothytaylor.co.uk) is an iconic Yorkshire heritage brand and one of the UK’s most respected family brewers. Based in Keighley, the business has a national reputation for producing high-quality, award-winning ales.

The Company supplies on trade customers both directly and through pub companies, wholesalers, and other distributors across the UK.  It also has a substantial off trade business, which is serviced through a long-standing partnership with Hall & Woodhouse brewery in Dorset.  In addition, Timothy Taylor’s operates a pub estate in its Yorkshire heartland.

As a result of the planned retirement of the current incumbent, Timothy Taylor’s seeks to appoint a Finance Director who will be a member of both the Executive Committee and the Board.

Role Purpose & Responsibilities

Operating as business partner to the Chief Executive; challenging and supporting as appropriate, the Finance Director works to help deliver business objectives by providing strategic and financial guidance. The Finance Director will ensure that the Company's financial commitments are met while developing and ensuring effective implementation of all necessary policies and procedures to ensure the sound financial management and control of the Company’s business.  The Finance Director will also have responsibility for the Company Secretariat, HR and IT functions.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the main Board and the Executive Committee in setting and implementing Company strategy

  • Provision of high-quality analytical work and scenario evaluations to generate insight for the CEO and Board in key areas of policy and business development

  • Coordination and presentation of annual budgets and forecasts

  • Development of added value Key Performance Indicators to assist commercial decision making

  • Preparation of monthly management accounts to audit standard and production of annual financial accounts in conjunction with Company auditors.

  • Management of Company tax liability and payments (CT, VAT, Excise Duty, PAYE)

  • Liaison with external advisors

  • Banking, Treasury, and Insurance

  • Company Secretarial including Board minutes, maintenance of share register, and Companies House reporting

  • HR related policies including contracts of employment, payroll, pension and life assurance schemes, disciplinary and grievance procedures



Skills, Competencies, and Personal Characteristics

Successful candidates will be degree educated and a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with extensive senior accountancy and managerial experience at Board level.  They will have broad commercial skills with the capability to provide stewardship and oversight of all key functions including management/financial accounting; forecasting; insurance, legal & contracts; property; and pensions. They should have strong IT skills and a good awareness of trends within the area.

In terms of personal characteristics, candidates will be commercially astute, articulate, technically strong, dynamic, insightful and possess the gravitas and credibility to be an influential leader who operates effectively at both a strategic and operational level.  You must have high integrity combined with a commitment to good governance and the ability to handle pressure and critical decision-making.

You will be a real team-player with excellent communication skills and an open and collaborative approach.  Your style and approach should encompass a hands-on, ‘shirt-sleeves’ attitude as well as empathy with family-company values and ethos and the associated ‘patient capital’ approach and long-term perspective.

Last, but not least, personable with a good sense of humour.
