Job description

Axon Moore are working with a leading retail organisation with its HO in Blackburn who are looking for a Head of Cash and Banking on an interim or potentially permanent basis.

Having made a series of acquisitions in recent years, the company has embarked on a programme of transformation. The first part of this transformation is the investment in its system landscape including a SAP transformation programme to bring all entities onto one common SAP ERP platform. With two regions already successfully under its belt, the rest of the business is now lined up to move onto the single SAP platform setting the stage for the second part of the transformation.

The second part of the transformation programme is to both standardise and continuously improve process and controls, enabled in part by the standardised SAP ERP platform.

As Head of Cash & Banking you will play a critical role in both parts of this transformation as they help in standardising processes and controls, both inside and outside of SAP, and in continuously finding new and better ways for the business to operate its cash, banking and card related processes.

This is a senior level role reporting into the Finance Operations Director.

Role:

Lead a team of people with the responsibility for owning and driving improvements and the adoption of best practice relating to cash, banking and card processes and controls across a large global multinational organisation.
You will need to manage, coach and mentor their team on best practice relating to cash, banking and card processes and controls as well as wider coaching and mentoring on softer skills.
Working with Finance peers and associated stakeholders across the business, the Head of Cash and Banking will ensure efficient and accurate cash and banking processes and controls are in place across all our non-US regions of operations.
While the remit of the role is global it is anticipated that there will be minimal, if any, travel as all non-US transactional work is performed at the company’s head office in Blackburn.

Duties:
  • Must take ownership of the cash, banking and credit card related transactional processes and controls and continuously design improvements. Be a hands-on SME on cash, bank and card reconciliations to ensure processes and controls are operating effectively.
  • Be able to create and execute plans effectively and ideally have process mapping experience. Can successfully project manage others to improve cash, banking and card related processes and controls.
  • Identify risks in processes and controls and present them to others together with options to mitigate risks.
  • Be proactive in coming up with new and inventive ways of improving processes and controls. Together with IT, be able to manage the implementation of new systems (eg Blackline)
  • Always have the end user in mind to ensure their experience is a great one and have a focus on operational impacts at all times to ensure that processes continue to add value to the business.
  • Work collaboratively alongside peers to ensure, where required, that end-to-end processes are optimised, designing cash, banking and card processes that dovetail seamlessly into other processes where they interact.
  • Coach and educate the team on best practice relating to operating cash, banking and card related processes and to instil the skills and confidence in the team to enable them to make decisions independently where appropriate.
  • Coach and educate the team in terms of softer skills and ensure each member of the team has a plan to develop themselves. Support them with their development.
  • Share and encourage best practice with end-users to ensure best practice is both understood and also adopted.
  • Create strong relationships with other members of the Finance team and business stakeholders at all levels to gain their trust and be a credible partner in helping them improve ways of working.
  • To be able to effectively recruit and retain expert team members who can take a hands-on approach to making change and will enhance and compliment the team culture. Alternatively, to recruit high-potential candidates and train them to become the SME’s of the future.
  • To be able to understand enough detail to have meaningful conversations with the team about their work and make quick decisions, but not getting so caught up in the detail as to lose perspective and fail to drive forward the wider change.
  • To be able to use Excel to work with large volumes of data, analyse it and report it in a meaningful way.
  • Drive standardisation to ensure that as far as possible all changes are implemented globally in a standardised way.
  • Where appropriate, work on future acquisitions (and divestments) made by Group and provide support in ensuring new acquisitions adopt standard processes as defined by Finance.
  • Experience in rationalising bank accounts is desirable but not mandatory.
Person Specification:
  • Qualified accountant with at least 5+ years of experience
  • Experienced manager with proven ability to create and retain high-performing teams
  • Recent large-scale experience as an SME with cash and banking / transactional services or related disciplines
  • Track record of independently improving processes and controls
  • Experience of operating in a relatively large, complex business
  • IT literate – Excel, PowerPoint. Understanding of processes in ERP systems. System implementation experience (Blackline desirable)
  • Have an inventive and pro-active mind-set to independently identify and resolve data, process and controls related issues.
